    Nikon Nikkor Z 14-30mm f/4 S Announcement

      News

A unique compact construction with a possibility of screwing polarizing filters and high-class optical solutions - this is the new Nikon Nikkor Z 14-30 mm f/4 S.

Nikkor Z 14-30 mm f/4 S is a lens which has been designed having in mind photographers and filmmakers who are looking for a sharp, very wide lens with variable focal length. Nikon Z is a perfect choice for landscape, event, interior and architecture photography.

The optical system of Nikkor Z 14-30 mm f/4 S consists of 14 elements placed in 12 groups. Among them there are 4 ED lenses and 4 apsherical elements. The use of the anti-reflective Nano Cystal Coat is to effectively reduce light reflections and flares.

The lens is also supposed to be characterized by quick, precise and quiet focus adjustment. It is also equipped with the improved Nikon Stepping Motor (STM).

Nikkor is fully compatible with the 5-axis image stabilization in-built in Nikons Z 6 and Z 7, which, in combination with the 14mm focal length should work effectively at longer exposure times.

The new Nikkor is also a uniquely compact construction as for the camera in its class. With the dimensions of 89mm × 85mm and the weight of 485g, it is much smaller and lighter than the lenses with similar parameters. What's more, since the front lens is not as convex as in the lenses with the 2.8 aperture, we can also use screwed filters with this lens, which additionally makes it an attractive one for landscape and architectural photographers. Similarly to other lenses from the S Line, Nikon Nikkor Z 14-30 mm f/4 S has been equipped with a ring which can be personalized and we can assign to it, for instance, manual focus adjustment, exposition compensation or aperture control - depending on personal preferences or the photography situation. Apart from that, the selected non-standard settings can be saved - different ones for the photography mode and different ones for the movie mode.

Nikon Nikkor Z 14-30mm f/4 S is the first ultra-wide lens intended for use in the mirrorless Nikon Z system. This lens is also the first such a compact full-frame lens on the market. It has been designed having in mind landscape, architecture and event photography. Thanks to its compact size, a possibility of installing screwed filters and a quiet autofocus, it should also fulfil its role as the filming lens.

      DESCRIPTION
The optical system of Nikon Nikkor Z 14-30mm f/4 S consists of 14 elements which are divided into 12 groups. Four of them are ED (Extra-Low Dispersion) elements, developed by Nikon, whose aim is the correction of achromatic aberrations. The four remaining elements are the aspherical ones - non-spherical surface lenses, which reduce aberrations and correct distortion in wide-angle lenses. Thanks to the use of aspherical elements, the lens has a compact size since they reduce the number of standard (spherical) elements.

In addition, the lenses are covered with an anti-reflective coating (Nano Crystal Coat), which reduces a majority of internal lens element reflections and effectively reduces ghosts and flares caused by light entering the lens diagonally. The front lens is covered with Fluorine Coat, which makes the surface of the lens repel dust, grease, dirt and water droplets.

A seven-blade, highly accurate electromagnetic diaphgragm mechanism, which enables automatic control of exposition during continuous shooting has been applied in the lens. With conventional D/G type lenses, the diaphragm blades are operated by mechanical linkage levers.

The autofocus is controlled by the Stepping Motor (STM), known from Nikon. Thanks to this, the focusing is fast, precise, smooth and, above all, quiet. Such a quiet drive system makes this lens a perfect filming lens.  Minimum focus  distance is 28cm (11.02").

Nikkor Z 14-30mm f/4 S is, of course, compatible with Dual Detect 5 Axis VR used in Nikons Z. This system enables up to 5 stops of pitch, yaw, roll, X and Y shake correction as well as a possible use of additional electronic stabilization during filming.

In Nikon Nikkor Z 14-30mm f/4 S, the aluminum-plastic body with a rubberized ring of focal length regulation has been applied. In addition, the lens has an aluminum customizable control ring, which can be used for manual focusing, aperture control, ISO control or exposure compensation. The lens is the first ultra-wide (14mm) lens on which we will mount attachable lens filters with the diameter of 82mm, which will surely by appreciated by landscape photographers and videographers.

The lens barrel is extensively sealed against water and dust for long worry-free durability. Nikkor Z 14-30mm f/4 S measures just 85mm (3.5") and weighs just 485g (1.07lb)

      COMPARISON WITH SIMILAR LENSES
Nikon Nikkor Z 14-30mm f/4 S can be indirectly compared with two lenses: Nikon AF-S Nikkor 16-35mm f/4G ED VR and Tamron SP 15-30mm f/2.8 Di VC USD G2. Both lenses are not native lenses for the cameras with the Z-Mount and they can be connected to Nikons Z only with the use of the FTZ adapter.

      NIKON NIKKOR Z 14-30mm f/4 S vs. NIKON AF-S NIKKOR 16-35mm f/4G ED VR
Despite the fact that both lenses have a similar focal length and the same aperture, they are very different constructions.

Nikkor 14-30mm f/4 has a wider angle of view on the wide-angle focal length by 7 degrees (114° vs 107°) but, at the same time, it has a smaller angle at the maximum aperture (72° vs 63°) by 8 degrees. The optical system of Nikkor Z 14-30mm f/4 consists of 14 elements placed in 12 groups. The 16-35mm lens is a bit more complicated since it has 17 elements placed in 12 groups. In both lenses, the same Nano Crystal Coat has been used. In addition, the 14-30mm lens has the Fluorine Coat at the external lens, which protects it against dust, grease and water.
Nikon Nikkor Z 14-30mm f/4 S is a more perfect lens when it comes to the optical system, which is much sharper within the full frame in comparison to Nikon AF-S Nikkor 16-35mm f/4G ED VR.

Maximum and minimum apertures are  the same in both lenses and they amount to, respectively, f/4 and f/22. Nikon Nikkor Z 14-30mm f/4 S uses 2 more diaphragm blades than 16-35mm f/4G.

Both lenses have similar autofocus motors, but in the newer model, its improved version has been used and it works better during filming. The autofocus is much quieter and more precise.

Nikon Nikkor Z 14-30mm f/4 S does not have the in-built image stabilization and it depends on the 5-axis stabilization which is in-built in the camera's body. Nikkor 16-35mm applies the 3-axis stabilization, with the effectiveness of 2.5 stops. This stabilization works after connecting to every body with the F-Mount.

The greatest differences between Nikon Nikkor Z 14-30mm f/4 S and AF-S 16-35mm f/4G ED VR concern their constructions. Nikon Nikkor Z 14-30mm f/4 S is 195g (1.28lb) lighter and 40mm (1.57") shorter. Both lenses are weather-sealed and screwed filters can be installed on both of them.

Nikon Nikkor Z 14-30mm f/4 S is a much more compact lens, while maintaining similar optical parameters.
