    Nikon Z7 and Z6 Announcement

      News

The waiting is over and all the questions have finally found their answers. Today we had the premieres of two of the most awaited cameras of the last years - Nikons Z6 and Z7.

The cameras' bodies look almost the same and both have been sealed against dust and splashes. Both have two knobs and the buttons have been positioned in the same places. Two function buttons are near the grip and we also have the AF joystick and the PASM knob. The cameras have only one memory card slot (XQD).

The brand's fans may be a little disappointed by the lack of the mode dial, the dedicated measurement mode control button, the AF switching lever and the serial mode switch. But it doesn't mean that the producer has deprived us of control over these functions since we get three user modes and the function buttons with a possibility of modification. The cameras' menu will not be a novelty for the brand's fans since it is the same solution that we've known from top Nikon reflex cameras, together with a handy panel.

Nikons Z6 and Z7 are equipped with an electronic OLED viewfinder with the resolution of 3.690.000 points on which we can display the pop-up menu. The zoom ratio is 0.8x. The viewfinder's eyepiece is covered with the fluorine coating. If we're talking about displays – both new Nikons have two more. The back rotating 3.2'' touch LCD screen has the resolution of 2.100.000 pixels. In the upper panel we will find one more auxiliary screen.

Real differences can be found inside the new cameras. The BSI CMOS sensors, with which the “Z” Nikons have been equipped, have the resolutions of, respectively, 24.5 and 45.7 Mp and 5-axis vibration stabilization system with the effectiveness of 5EV. The sensors are supported by the latest EXPEED 6 processor. The sensitivity ranges are respectively: ISO 100 - 51200 (can be extended to ISO 50 - 204800) and ISO 64 - 25600 (can be extended to ISO 32 - 102400). The speed of photographing of the cameras is 12f/s and 9f/s – these are results for the photographs saved in 12-bit RAW.

The autofocus of Nikons Z6 and Z7 has contrast and phase detection and it is based on 493 or 273 points which cover 90% of the frame vertically and horizontally. The AF is also supposed to be fully functional while recording films. Both devices register videos in 4K (3840 x 2160) with the speed of 30f/s. In FHD, this value will increase to 120f/s. Nikon Z6 offers full-frame saving with the readout of all pixels, thanks to which the “smaller” of the cameras described today should prove useful in low light conditions.

    4). Nikon Z7 + Nikon Nikkor Z 24-70 f/4 S

Even while recording in 4K we will be supported by the electronic vibration reduction and we will be able to save the image in the “flat” image Nikon N-Long profile. The 10-bit signal will be sent from Nikon to external devices with the use of the HDMI cable. The 10 - bit videos can be also saved on the memory card but only in Full HD. The focus peaking function and a possibility of handling time codes are also worth mentioning. Equipping the cameras with headphone and microphone connectors will certainly attract vloggers.

    articles_000162_05.jpg

    5). Nikon Z7 VR

The electronic shutter of the cameras is silent and the 8K time-lapse films will be recorded only with the use of Z7. There are also options of sharpening in the image control settings as well as the Wi-Fi module for communication with smartphones and for transferring files to the computer. Z6 and Z7 are compatible with the existing Nikon accessories, such as the WT-7 wireless transmitter which provides radio control of the lighting systems and enables transferring files to the computer in a faster way. Soon we can expect a dedicated MB-N10 battery grip due to which the working time of the cameras will increase by 1.8x and which we will be able to charge with the use of USB.

The most controversial novelty of the new “Z” Nikon system is the mounting of lenses. It is significantly bigger than the one in the existing full-frame cameras and it has the diameter of 55mm. Many new lens constructions should follow the new mounts. For instance, the brightest lens in the brand's history, with the aperture of f/0.95, was announced today. With the use of the FTZ adapter we will be able to use the F system lenses in new Nikon cameras which should result in worsening the effectiveness of image stabilization.

    6). Nikon Z7 + FTZ Adapter

Nikon Z7 will appear on sale in September and it will cost $3399 for the body only. In a set with the 24-70mm f/4 lens, the price will amount to $3999. Z6 will appear on sale in November and it will cost $1995 for the body only or $2599 in a set with the lens. You can preorder this cameras here.

Together with the cameras, the lenses in the new standard, namely Nikkor Z 24-70mm f/4 S, Nikkor Z 35mm f/1.8 S and Nikkor Z 50mm f/1.8 S, also had their premieres.

      DESCRIPTION OF THE NIKON Z6
Nikon Z6 and Nikon Z7 are two cameras which start a new chapter in the company’s history. These are the first full-frame mirrorless cameras of the producer and they are additionally equipped with a much bigger lens mount - Z-Mount.

The Z6 model has been created to ensure the best possible results in low light. If the camera was not equipped with only one memory card, it would be perfect for reporting and wedding photography.

Nikon Z6 is equipped with the 24.5Mp BSI CMOS sensor and the 5-axis vibration stabilization system (with the estimated effectiveness of 5 EV). The sensor is supported by the latest-generation EXPEED 6 processor which enables work within the ISO range of 100-51200 and photographing with the maximum speed of 12f/s.

Besides that, we also get the hybrid (contrast-detection and phase-detection) AF system based on 273 points, which covers 90% of the frame vertically and horizontally and which is going to be fully useful also while recording films.

When it comes to the film mode, Z6 enables recording films in 4K UHD (3840 × 2160 pixels) with the speed of 30f/s, in the full-frame mode. In the case of Full HD films, the highest available speed is 120f/s, which will be surely appreciated by slow-motion fans. What’s more, even while recording in 4K, we get the electronic vibration reduction support and the camera enables saving images in the “flat” Nikon N-log profile as well as issuing 10-bit signal to external recorders with the use of HDMI.

The camera will surely not disappoint when it comes to the preview since the device is equipped with the electronic OLED viewfinder with the resolution of 3.690.000 points and the 0.8x zoom. In addition, the eyepiece is covered with the fluorine coating, which will facilitate keeping it clean. We also shouldn’t forget about an auxiliary LCD screen placed on the upper panel.

The camera’s body has been sealed against dust and splashes. It has two control knobs and the AF joystick on the back panel as well as the PASM knob. Unfortunately, there is only one memory card slot (XQD).

Unluckily, we will not find the dedicated measurement mode control button, the AF switching lever and the serial mode switch. Still, it’s worth noticing that we get three user modes and function buttons, which, after configuration, should ensure convenient camera control. The producer has also made sure that the handling of the camera should not cause any problems to the existing Nikon users. The camera has the menu taken from top reflex cameras, together with a handy panel which will enable the regulation of the most important photography parameters.
