Sony FE 16-35mm f/2.8 GM Announcement

      News

Sony FE 16-35mm f/2.8 GM from the professional G Master series is a new lens intended to be used in landscape and architectural photography.

The optical system consists of 16 elements placed in 13 groups, including 5 aspherical lenses and 2 made of low-dispersion glass. Such a solution is to ensure perfect focus within the whole frame view and minimize chromatic aberration. Additionally, the lenses are covered with Nano AR coatings, which are supposed to reduce light reflection and ensure high contrast. The front lens is additionally covered with a fluorine coating, which makes it easier to clean the lens from dirt and other forms of contamination.

Similarly to other lenses from the G Master series, Sony used a 11-blade aperture. A well-known system of two ultrasonic DDSSM motors is responsible for adjusting focus.

The whole construction is, of course, sealed and it weighs 680g, which is a good result for such a professional lens.

The Sigma's Art series will soon become enriched by a new macro lens. The optical system of the new lens is unique and it cannot be found in the previous models of the series.

As it is usually the case with Sigma, the lens has to be different than all other lenses available on the market. This one is equipped with a different mechanism of external focusing, which is going to be a disadvantage for many macro photographers. However, Sigma is of opinion that it is impossible to create a perfect lens of such a type, which adjusts focus not changing its external length at the same time. Zeiss lenses work in similar ways and they cannot be considered as poor with regard to optical parameters.

The optical system of the lens consists of 13 elements, placed in 10 groups, among which 6 are special low-dispersion SLD and FLD lenses. Besides that, there are also apsherical lenses, thanks to which the image sharpness is supposed to be even within the whole frame.

The lens is equipped with a 9-blade aperture and a maximum zoom of 1:1, as most of the lenses of this type. The minimum focus distance is 25.8.

Sigma 70mm f/2.8 DG Macro ART is equipped with the autofocus based on the DC drive and the sharpness can be adjusted manually with the use of a big knob.

The Sigma EM-140 DG  flash, as well as  Sigma USB Dock, can be connected to the lens, which is definitely going to be useful...

The lens weighs 515g/18.2oz and it has the dimensions of 70,8x105,8mm. It is fully sealed.

Each element has been covered with anti-reflective coatings, which are supposed to significantly minimize light reflection and the appearance of light leaks and flares. It is also supposed to improve overall contrast of photographs in demanding conditions. The lens is equipped with a 8-blade aperture which can be regulated within the range of f/2.8-f/16. The focal length of 25mm ensures 10.3-grade field of view.  The lens is, of course, manual.
