Venus Optics Laowa 25mm f/2.8 2.5-5X Ultra Macro Announcement

      News

Venus Optics Laowa 25mm f/2.8 2.5-5X Ultra Macro is an interesting lens which has been presented some time ago. It is a full-frame lens, designed having in mind macrography.

The optical system of the lens enables the image zoom from 2.5 to 5x and it consists of 8 elements placed in 6 groups,  among which one lens is made of UD low-dispersion glass.

Each element has been covered with anti-reflective coatings, which are supposed to significantly minimize light reflection and the appearance of light leaks and flares. It is also supposed to improve overall contrast of photographs in demanding conditions. The lens is equipped with a 8-blade aperture which can be regulated within the range of f/2.8-f/16. The focal length of 25mm ensures 10.3-grade field of view.  The lens is, of course, manual.

Irix 150mm f/2.8 Macro 1:1, as the very name suggests, has the focal length of 150mm and the 1:1 mapping scale, thanks to which it is to ensure very convenient work during macro photography. Due to the longer focal length, we will be able to avoid covering the light falling on photographed objects and scaring them away.

The optical system of the lens is based on twelve lenses placed in nine groups – there are three low-dispersion elements and four made of high-refraction glass. The producer assures that the distortion should be reduced to the level of 0,01%. The lens is equipped with the internal focusing system thanks to which the whole construction does not change its size during focusing. The lens’ aperture consists of eleven blades and it can be closed up to the value of f/32. The characteristic traits of the device should be nice background blurring and the diffraction which should happen later than in other lenses of such a type. Sharp photographs can be taken already from the distance of 34.5cm.

The lens has the "Dragonfly" finishing, which means that it is a combination of advantages of "Firefly" and "Blackstone" lenses – the frame has been made of aluminum and the housing – of aluminum and magnesium alloys with composite elements. The whole construction has been sealed with particular focus put on the most sensitive places (front lens, focus lock ring, focus ring and bayonet). The lens is relatively light and small, its dimensions are 87 × 135mm and its weight - 840g. We will be able to mount filters with the diameter of 77mm on its front.

The ring with the rotation scale of 270 degrees is to ensure high precision and culture of work. There is also a possibility of blocking the focus ring. The lens’ processor enables the control of the aperture from the level of the camera and the AE mode makes it possible to use semi-automatic modes (PASM). Thanks to this, the information on confirming focus from the level of the camera will be saved in the EXIF data.

If we buy the Irix 150mm f/2.8 Macro 1:1 lens, we will receive it in a stiff case in which we will also find a deep sunshield and the tripod grip in the Arca Swiss standard. The lens will be available with the Canon EF, Nikon F and Pentax K mounts.

We don’t know yet when the lens is going to appear on sale. Its price is also unknown.

Two of the biggest telephoto Canon lenses - EF 400mm f/2.8L IS III USM and EF 600mm f/4L IS III USM have become renewed. In their third versions, the devices have significantly lost on weight, they became sealed and their ergonomy has significantly improved.

Canon EF 400mm f/2.8L IS III, with the dimensions of 163 x 343mm, lost more than one kilogram - from 3850g to 2840g. A slimming treatment of the bigger of the lenses, EF 600mm f/4L IS III USM, has been a little less successful and the lens now weights 3050g (its predecessor -  3920g) and it has the dimensions of 168 x 448mm. Both lenses have been sealed and the white finishing which characterizes the lenses from the L series is thermal insulation, thanks to which the devices are supposed to work better in extreme temperatures. In order to facilitate keeping the lenses clean, the external surfaces of the first and the last lens have been covered with the fluorine coating.

1). Canon EF 400mm f/2.8L IS III USM

Both lenses are equipped with the control elements on the body enabling focus adjustment, blocking and stopping focus settings. With the use of the ring knob we can go to two pre-programmed focus positions at any time. The focus mode, focus range, programmed focus restoration and the IS controllers are placed ergonomically.

2). Canon EF 400mm f/2.8L IS III USM

The optical systems of both lenses are similar - in both of them we have seventeen lenses placed in thirteen groups, a 9-blade aperture which can be closed up to f/32, while the nominal aperture for 400 mm is f/2.8 and for 600mm - f/4. In both lenses we will find the elements of fluorite lenses and the SubWavelenght Structure Coating (SWC) so we can expect significant reduction in chromatic aberration, flares and blurring while maintaining high quality of the reproduced colors, high resolution and contrast.

3). Canon EF 600mm f/4L IS III USM

The autofocus has also been treated as priority. New Canon lenses are equipped with ring USM motors with autofocus and an effective processor enabling fast and quiet AF work. Both lenses make it possible to obtain the  "pull-focus" effect with focus regulation and focus preset. Manual focus adjustment in full-time is also available and the focusing speed can be adjusted also by manual electronic regulation.

4). Canon EF 600mm f/4L IS III USM

The lenses are to appear on sale in December and they will cost respectively:
Canon EF 400 mm f/2.8L IS III USM - $12,000
Canon EF 600 mm f/4L IS III USM - $13,000

In the sets we will find only soft cases. Hard suitcases and new short hoods will be available optionally.
