One of the first (if not THE first) reviews on the internet of this soon-to-be-very-popular-indeed very low budget Canon RF mount lens. Even if its optical performance isn't great, at $300 it's bound to sell like hot cakes...but might as well review it anyway, haha 🙂

In-depth review of the new Canon RF 16mm f/2.8 STM ultra wide prime lens for Canon EOS R series cameras. I talk about use cases, image quality, distortions, aberrations, autofocus speed and noise (or rather complete lack thereof!). I compare the corner quality of stars for astrophotography at different apertures and you can also inspect the images that I took for yourself by downloading RAWs and/or JPEGs that I took (see below)

CHAPTERS:

  • 00:00 Intro and disclaimers
  • 00:50 Build quality and features
  • 01:45 Compatibility with clip-in filters

  • 06:14 Sharpness at different apertures
  • 07:32 Close focusing and closeup sharpness
  • 08:14 Astrophotography: speed and focus

When it was first announced, we were surprised by how small and affordable the Canon RF 16mm F2.8 STM was. Ever since, we've wanted to try one out and we finally had a chance! Canon's RF mount may boast plenty of fancy, expensive optics, but this might be one of the most exciting lenses in the system.
