    Sony Alpha 6400 Announced

Sony has presented the successor of the α6300 model, namely α6400. The new camera seems to be an attractive alternative also for the α6500 model, which is, theoretically, a higher-level model despite the fact that it does not offer some of the α6400 properties. Leaving behind the idiotic ways of naming used by almost all producers of the photography equipment, Sony α6400 is a new, very interesting camera for advanced amateurs, video makers and all people who want to have a small but effective mirrorless camera. Sony α6400 places special stress on the speed. As previously, we have the 24MP APS-C sensor (ISO range of 100-102400), but this time it is supported by the latest BIONZ X processor, taken from the flagship A9 model. 1). Sony Alpha 6400 In addition, we get a fast serial mode, which enables taking photographs with the speed of 11f/s with full AF support and the buffer which enables saving 116 JPEG and 46 RAW photographs in a series. The producer also boasts about its 425-point phase-detection autofocus, which covers 84% of the frame. Currently, it is the fastest autofocus in the world, which enables focusing within only 0.02 seconds. Thanks to the use of new algorithms, the producer managed to make a huge step ahead in terms of object-tracking and eye-detection modes. It seems that for the first time we get a system on whose effectiveness we may depend. The newest camera is also advertised as every vlogger’s dream. Still, it does not have the sensor stabilization system, which, next to the autofocus, is the most important function, and which is offered by the α6500 model. We get a full-frame 4K @ 30p save as well as the Full HD save with the speed of 120f/s. There is also a micrphone connector, a possibility of powering the camera through USB during recording, the Hybrid Log Gamma mode as well as flat S-Log2 and S-Log3 profiles. The camera's screen, which can be rotated upwards, should be useful in filming. During blogging, we will probably cover it with a microphone mounted on a hot shoe. 2). Sony Alpha 6400 The camera’s body has been sealed and it has been made of magnesium. The buttons, as could be expected from Sony, enable significant personalization. Out of its goodness, Sony has also decided to introduce the interval mode and a possibility of making time-lapse videos, which, hopefully, will also appear in the higher-level cameras. We should stress the fact that the body has an attractive price. We will pay $899 for the α6400 camera (body only) and $1,000 as well as $1,300 for the sets with the 16-50mm and 18-135mm kit lenses (respectively). The camera will be available at the beginning of February this year.

Unfortunately, the sensor does not have stabilization, but it is supported by the Bionz X processor taken from the top Sony a9 model, which enables the uncompromising speed of image compression. The characteristic trait of Sony a6400 is a uniquely quick and precise 425-point phase-detection autofocus, which covers 84% of the frame. It enables focusing within only 0.02 seconds. Thanks to the system using "artificial intelligence", the producer managed to make a huge step ahead in terms of object-tracking and eye-detection modes. The Real Time Eye AF and Real Time AF Tracking functions perfectly track the marked objects, also during serial photography and filming. The camera has a fast serial mode, which enables taking photographs with the speed of 11f/s, with full AF support in the mechanical shutter mode, and the speed of 8fps in the electronic shutter mode as well as the buffer which makes it possible to save 116 JPEG or 46 RAW photographs in a series. The shutter life expectancy is estimated for 200 thousand cycles. Sony a6400 has been also equipped with the interval mode, which enables making time-lapse films, and a new mobile application, Imaging Edge Mobile. a6400 perfectly fulfils its role in filming. The camera enables recording films in 4K, which is downsample from 6K with the speed of 30fps and Full HD with the speed of 120fps. Apart from that, we get the microphone connector, a possibility of powering the camera through USB during recording, the Hybrid Log Gamma mode as well as flat S-Log2 and S-Log3 profiles. The camera is also equipped with the screen which can be rotated upwards and which will work perfectly during vlogging. The whole ideal image of the camera is only flawed by the lack of sensor stabilization, but we can, of course, use stabilized lenses. The camera’s body is fully made of magnesium and sealed. We also have a possibility of the personalization of 8 buttons on the housing (89 functions to choose from), which should enable adjusting the camera to individual needs. Own bookmarks in the main menu and the arrangement of the auxiliary menu can also be personalized. Nikon Z 6 Filmmaker's Kit Announced

At the CES fairs, Nikon has announced that a special Nikon Z 6 Filmmaker's Kit will appear on sale at the end of January. The kit will include Nikon Z 6 with the Nikkor Z 24-70mm f/4 S lens, FTZ adapter, Atomos Ninja V recorder, Moza Air 2 gimbal, Rode VideoMic Pro+ and the additional battery as well as a few less necessary accessories. The whole set will cost $4,000 and, according to the producer's calculations, by buying the whole set we will save $1200. Still, according to our calculations, we will save at most $650 but if we don't need Vimeo Pro Plan - only $430. Nikon Z 6 Mirrorless Digital Camera with 24-70mm Lens and FTZ Adapter - $2,750 Atomos Ninja V 5" Recording - $700 Moza Air 2 Gimbal Stabilizer - $600 Nikon EN-EL15b Battery - $60 Rode VideoMic Pro Plus Microphone - $300 Moza Magic Arms - $20 Vimeo Pro Plan - $220 1). Nikon Z 6 Filmmaker's Kit What's more, Nikon has announced that the expansion of the compatibility of new Z 6 and Z 7 bodies by the support for CFexpress cards (the successor of the XQD format), which have been announced for around 2 years, should soon appear on the consumer market. There are also works on the Eye AF function, namely eye-detection and a possibility of video recording in the ProRes RAW codec. This option will be a available only in the case of the external recorder, Atomos Ninja V. 2). Nikon Z 6 with Rode VideoMic Pro Plus As for now, we don't know when the firmware which should enable enriching the camera by the mentioned functions, will appear on sale. Still, we can expect that it will take a few months.
  7. Nikon has updated its „map of lenses“ for the mirrorless system with the Z mount. Instead of the 58mm f/0.95 S Noct lens, which was supposed to have its premiere at the beginning of the year, we can pre-order new Nikkor Z 14-30 mm f/4 S. This premiere is surely a good idea taking into account the fact that until then the system did not have a native ultra-wide lens and Noct is an unpractical exotic lens. As we can see from the updated list below, the producer is planning to present 5 more lenses this year: two zooms, 24-70 f/2.8 S and 70-200 f/2.8 S, three fixed lenses, 24mm f/1.8 S, 85mm f/1.8 S, and Nikkor Z 58mm f/0.95 S Noct, which is to fully show the possibilities of the Nikon Z system. 1). Nikon Nikkor Z Lenses Roadmap Many novelties are also to appear in 2020. Nikon's offer will expand by 7 constructions, from which we already knows three: 20mm f/1.8 S, 50mm f/1.2 S, and the advanced zoom Nikkor 14-24 f/2.8 S. The list of lenses looks very well because within one-and-a-half year we will have practically a full range of reporter lenses at our disposal and possibly all of the most popular fixed lenses. It's worth noting that the list for 2020 is still open...

    Nikon Nikkor Z 14-30mm f/4 S Announcement

A unique compact construction with a possibility of screwing polarizing filters and high-class optical solutions - this is the new Nikon Nikkor Z 14-30 mm f/4 S. Nikkor Z 14-30 mm f/4 S is a lens which has been designed having in mind photographers and filmmakers who are looking for a sharp, very wide lens with variable focal length. Nikon Z is a perfect choice for landscape, event, interior and architecture photography. 1). Nikon Nikkor Z 14-30mm f/4 S The optical system of Nikkor Z 14-30 mm f/4 S consists of 14 elements placed in 12 groups. Among them there are 4 ED lenses and 4 apsherical elements. The use of the anti-reflective Nano Cystal Coat is to effectively reduce light reflections and flares. 2). Nikon Nikkor Z 14-30mm f/4 S The lens is also supposed to be characterized by quick, precise and quiet focus adjustment. It is also equipped with the improved Nikon Stepping Motor (STM). Nikkor is fully compatible with the 5-axis image stabilization in-built in Nikons Z 6 and Z 7, which, in combination with the 14mm focal length should work effectively at longer exposure times. 3). Nikon Z 7 + Nikon Nikkor Z 14-30mm f/4 S The new Nikkor is also a uniquely compact construction as for the camera in its class. With the dimensions of 89mm × 85mm and the weight of 485g, it is much smaller and lighter than the lenses with similar parameters. What's more, since the front lens is not as convex as in the lenses with the 2.8 aperture, we can also use screwed filters with this lens, which additionally makes it an attractive one for landscape and architectural photographers. Similarly to other lenses from the S Line, Nikon Nikkor Z 14-30 mm f/4 S has been equipped with a ring which can be personalized and we can assign to it, for instance, manual focus adjustment, exposition compensation or aperture control - depending on personal preferences or the photography situation. Apart from that, the selected non-standard settings can be saved - different ones for the photography mode and different ones for the movie mode. 4). Nikon Z 7 + Nikon Nikkor Z 14-30mm f/4 S Nikon Nikkor Z 14-30 mm f/4 S is to appear on sale in the spring this year. The lens will cost $1,299. You can pre-order it by clicking on this link. Nikon Nikkor Z 14-30mm f/4 S is the first ultra-wide lens intended for use in the mirrorless Nikon Z system. This lens is also the first such a compact full-frame lens on the market. It has been designed having in mind landscape, architecture and event photography. Four of them are ED (Extra-Low Dispersion) elements, developed by Nikon, whose aim is the correction of achromatic aberrations. The four remaining elements are the aspherical ones - non-spherical surface lenses, which reduce aberrations and correct distortion in wide-angle lenses. Thanks to the use of aspherical elements, the lens has a compact size since they reduce the number of standard (spherical) elements. In addition, the lenses are covered with an anti-reflective coating (Nano Crystal Coat), which reduces a majority of internal lens element reflections and effectively reduces ghosts and flares caused by light entering the lens diagonally. The front lens is covered with Fluorine Coat, which makes the surface of the lens repel dust, grease, dirt and water droplets. A seven-blade, highly accurate electromagnetic diaphgragm mechanism, which enables automatic control of exposition during continuous shooting has been applied in the lens. With conventional D/G type lenses, the diaphragm blades are operated by mechanical linkage levers. The autofocus is controlled by the Stepping Motor (STM), known from Nikon. Thanks to this, the focusing is fast, precise, smooth and, above all, quiet. Such a quiet drive system makes this lens a perfect filming lens. Minimum focus distance is 28cm (11.02"). Nikkor Z 14-30mm f/4 S is, of course, compatible with Dual Detect 5 Axis VR used in Nikons Z. This system enables up to 5 stops of pitch, yaw, roll, X and Y shake correction as well as a possible use of additional electronic stabilization during filming. In Nikon Nikkor Z 14-30mm f/4 S, the aluminum-plastic body with a rubberized ring of focal length regulation has been applied. In addition, the lens has an aluminum customizable control ring, which can be used for manual focusing, aperture control, ISO control or exposure compensation. The lens is the first ultra-wide (14mm) lens on which we will mount attachable lens filters with the diameter of 82mm, which will surely by appreciated by landscape photographers and videographers. The lens barrel is extensively sealed against water and dust for long worry-free durability. Nikkor Z 14-30mm f/4 S measures just 85mm (3.5") and weighs just 485g (1.07lb) PHOTOS OF THE NIKON NIKKOR Z 14-30mm f/4 S NIKON NIKKOR Z 14-30mm f/4 S VIDEO REVIEW COMPARISON WITH SIMILAR LENSES Nikon Nikkor Z 14-30mm f/4 S can be indirectly compared with two lenses: Nikon AF-S Nikkor 16-35mm f/4G ED VR and Tamron SP 15-30mm f/2.8 Di VC USD G2. Both lenses are not native lenses for the cameras with the Z-Mount and they can be connected to Nikons Z only with the use of the FTZ adapter. NIKON NIKKOR Z 14-30mm f/4 S vs. NIKON AF-S NIKKOR 16-35mm f/4G ED VR Despite the fact that both lenses have a similar focal length and the same aperture, they are very different constructions. Nikkor 14-30mm f/4 has a wider angle of view on the wide-angle focal length by 7 degrees (114° vs 107°) but, at the same time, it has a smaller angle at the maximum aperture (72° vs 63°) by 8 degrees. The optical system of Nikkor Z 14-30mm f/4 consists of 14 elements placed in 12 groups. The 16-35mm lens is a bit more complicated since it has 17 elements placed in 12 groups. In both lenses, the same Nano Crystal Coat has been used. In addition, the 14-30mm lens has the Fluorine Coat at the external lens, which protects it against dust, grease and water. Nikon Nikkor Z 14-30mm f/4 S is a more perfect lens when it comes to the optical system, which is much sharper within the full frame in comparison to Nikon AF-S Nikkor 16-35mm f/4G ED VR. Maximum and minimum apertures are the same in both lenses and they amount to, respectively, f/4 and f/22. Nikon Nikkor Z 14-30mm f/4 S uses 2 more diaphragm blades than 16-35mm f/4G. Both lenses have similar autofocus motors, but in the newer model, its improved version has been used and it works better during filming. The autofocus is much quieter and more precise. Nikon Nikkor Z 14-30mm f/4 S does not have the in-built image stabilization and it depends on the 5-axis stabilization which is in-built in the camera's body. Nikkor 16-35mm applies the 3-axis stabilization, with the effectiveness of 2.5 stops. This stabilization works after connecting to every body with the F-Mount. The greatest differences between Nikon Nikkor Z 14-30mm f/4 S and AF-S 16-35mm f/4G ED VR concern their constructions. Nikon Nikkor Z 14-30mm f/4 S is 195g (1.28lb) lighter and 40mm (1.57") shorter. Both lenses are weather-sealed and screwed filters can be installed on both of them. Nikon Nikkor Z 14-30mm f/4 S is a much more compact lens, while maintaining similar optical parameters. New Update of Darktable

Darktable is an advanced tool for editing RAW photographs and a main rival of a popular Adobe Lightroom. After the update to the 2.6 version, the program has been expanded by a series of new functions. Among other things, a tool for cloning and removing objects from photographs, a module responsible for colors and a possibility of simulating the characteristics of photographic plates have been introduced. In the new version of Darktable, we will find a new module intended for retouching photographs. It has also been equipped with the tools for local removal of objects with intelligent cloning, which give a possibility of individual action at a given level of detailedness - it should be a solution similar to the one known from the Adobe software, namely "spot removal tool". The module which simulates the use of various films should enable achieving the effects similar to the ones achieved thanks to the analog photography. The new tool is a combination of work with tone curve and sliders responsible for contrast, exposition and recovering details in too dark and too bright places of the frame. The "color balance" module has been designed, thanks to which we will achieve more control over colors. An improvement in functionality has also been achieved when it comes to the control of blurring of the blending mask of a chosen object. The new "duplicate manager" function will enable storing the duplicates of many versions of RAW files, which should facilitate the management of file library. We can install the Darktable software on the computers which work in Windows, Mac OS and Linux environments. We should remember that the update introduces a change in the format of the database and that after switching to version 2.6, we will not be able to return to the previous version. If we want to ensure a possibility of returning to the previous version, we have to remember about making a backup of our database. Darktable in the 2.6 version can be downloaded from www.darktable.org.

    DJI Osmo Pocket Announcement

The description of DJI Osmo Pocket may cause some problems since although we've already discussed many gimbals and sports cameras, we've never dealt with these two devices being permanently connected. That's why we're entering the unknown territory and it remains a mystery whether DJI's idea will find its regular place on the market and whether we will find similar devices from other producers. DJI Osmo Pocket is a small (12cm) 3-axis gimbal with a fixed sports camera, which is equipped with the 1/2.3'' 12MP sensor. With the use of it, we will be able to record films in 4K with the speed of 60f/s (100Mbps). Slow motion films will be recorded with the speed of 120f/s in Full HD. The camera is equipped with two microphones – one at the bottom of the device and one at the back. Recording sound is supported by the vibration and disruption reduction system. 1). DJI Osmo Pocket On the gimbal, we will find a 1'' screen with the use of which we can control the device. Still, full control over the device can be achieved thanks to a smartphone with the DJI Mimo application, connected to the USB-C port. The most interesting film modes of Osmo Pocket include Active Track (the mode of tracking an object which is moving within a frame) and Face Track (the mode of maintaining the sharpness of the filmed face). This is, of course, not everything – we also have Timelapse, Motionlapse, FPV Mode and Panorama modes. The Osmo Pocket users will be able to use additional Story Mode and Pro Mode functions on the smartphone's screen. The Story Mode consists of 10 templates with pre-programmed camera movement. When the recording ends, the mode autonomously creates a ready video sequence of the templates. The Pro Mode gives the user full control over the film settings. 2). DJI Osmo Pocket DJI Osmo Pocket has an in-built rechargeable battery which, according to the producer, should last for 2 hours of continuous recording in 4K. Osmo Pocket, as the very name suggests, may be put in a pocket since its dimensions are 121.9 × 28.6 × 36.9mm and it weighs 116g. The device is already available on sale and it costs $350. DJI has also presented a series of accessories which expand the possibilities of the device. They can be found on the website: dji.com.
