  1. Yesterday, Panasonic presented the G9 model – the camera which may become an interesting alternative for the Olympus system, particularly the OMD-EM1 Mark II model. In the table below you can find a comparison of specification of both models. However, it is worth remembering that the Olympus camera has been on the market for more than a year. The comparison of Panasonic G9 and the GH5 model can be found here. 2. Yesterday, quite unexpectedly, Panasonic presented a new model of the professional G9 camera. Despite the fact that the camera is not supposed to be a direct competitor of the GH5 model, which is to be perceived more like a video camera, it is hard to refrain from comparing the specifications of both cameras. The comparison of Panasonic G9 and OlympusOMD-EM1 Mark II can be found here. Panasonic Lumix DMC-G9 Announcement

For a few weeks we’ve been receiving information concerning the upcoming premiere of the new Panasonic camera, which was possibly going to be the successor of the GH5 model. However, no one has expected the premiere of a completely new model which will aim at the sector of professional photography. Although the GH5 model is a perfect camera, customers got used to calling it a great video camera. Looking through many websites and youtube videos, one can notice how many people underestimate or even disregards the photographic functions of that camera. Panasonic has possibly concluded that fighting with such an opinion doesn’t make sense and it decided to introduce a camera which is to be associated with photography from the very beginning. Although it’s a bit worse than the GH5 model when it comes to video functions, its photographic functions are splendid. 1). Panasonic Lumix DMC-G9 with DMW-BGG9 Grip The camera is equipped with the 20.3 Mp sensor without the low-pass filter, known from the GH5 model, supported by the latest generation of the Venus Engine processor. In addition, the sensor is covered with anti-reflective layer, which is supposed to ensure better reproduction of colors and image tonality. Such a set will enable us to take photographs within the ISO range of 200 - 25600 (which can be extended to ISO 100 - 25600) with the speed of 60 f/s in full resolution, while using an electronic shutter and single AF measurement (20 f/s in the C-AF mode). While using a standard mechanical shutter, the efficiency of the continuous shooting mode is very good and it offers the speed of 12 f/s in the single mode and 9 f/s in the continuous shooting mode. It is also worth mentioning that the buffer will contain more than 60 RAW and 600 JPG photographs. 2). Panasonic Lumix DMC-G9 The camera will also not disappoint the film-makers. We will be able to make films in 4K with the speed of 60 f/s, and the bit rate of 150Mb/s, with 8-bit sampling 4:2:0 (4:2:2 through HDMI but only up to 4K, 30 f/s), and with the speed up to 180 f/s in Full HD. Apart from that we also get a range of functions based on the film-making mode, such as 6K Photo (long continuous shooting with the speed of 30 f/s in 16 Mp resolution) or Post Focus (focus adjustment after taking a photograph). 3). Panasonic Lumix DMC-G9 with Leica 12-60 f/2.8-4 & DMW-MS2 Stereo Shotgun Microphone The camera is also equipped with the high resolution mode which is based on the system of sensor stabilization. The camera takes RAW photographs with the dimensions up to 10368x7776 pixels consisting of 8 frames and taken with the use of the sensor shift. While using this function, a tripod and a static photographed object will be necessary. 4). Panasonic Lumix DMC-G9 High Resolution Mode The very stabilization, with the support of the lenses stabilization, is supposed to have the efficiency up to 6.5 EV. Panasonic G9 is equipped with the improved 221-point AF system, which enables focusing within 0.04 s. However, it is still based only on contrast detection. 5). Panasonic Lumix DMC-G9 Dual I.S. 2 5-axis Image Stabilizer The camera, as could be expected in the case of such a professional construction, is fully made of magnesium and fully sealed. It has a big grip, 3 function knobs, a joystick to change AF points, and many function buttons. A big novelty is for sure an additional upper LCD screen with the most important information concerning the settings. Thanks to this, the camera does not differ from other professional cameras of the producer when it comes to the design. 6). Panasonic Lumix DMC-G9 The back screen is a touch LCD screen which is bit smaller than in the GH5 model. It has the resolution of 1.04Mp and the diagonal of 3’’. For the first time in the Micro Four Thirds system, we get a really big OLED viewfinder with 0.83x zoom (equivalent for full frame), the contrast of 10000:1 and the eyepoint of 21mm. What’s interesting, we will be able to control the viewfinder’s zoom within the range of 0.7-0.83x in order to adjust the size of the image to the used lens and the surrounding conditions. In the continuous shooting mode, the viewfinder is to be distinguished by zero delay of the image display. 7). Panasonic Lumix DMC-G9 The camera has 2 UHS-II SD card inputs, microphone and earphone inputs, as well as USB 3.0 and mini HDMI connectors. The used rechargeable battery (DMW-BLF19) is known from the GH4 and GH5 models and it enables us to take 920 photographs under the condition that we use a viewfinder in the energy-saving mode. 8). Panasonic Lumix DMC-G9 High Resolution Mode Additionally, we will be able to equip our G9 with a vertical grip, on which we may place an additional battery. 9). Panasonic Lumix DMC-G9 with DMW-BGG9 Grip Panasonic G9 will cost $1699 for body only. The camera is to appear on sale in January 2018. Possibly, the producer came to the conclusion that fighting with this opinion is meaningless and it decided to introduce into the market a camera which is to be associated mainly with photography. When it comes to the video functions, the new camera is only a little weaker than the GH5 model, but its photography functions are completely different. The camera is equipped with the 20.3 sensor, without a low-pass filter, supported by the latest-generation Venus Engine processor. In addition, the sensor is covered with the anti-glare layer, which is to ensure better color reproduction and image tonality. This set will make it possible to take photographs within the ISO range of 200 - 25600 (extended to ISO 100 - 25600) with the speed of 60f/s in full resolution, with the use of the electronic shutter and single AF measurement (20f/s in the C-AF mode). The efficiency of the continuous shooting mode looks very good with the use of a standard mechanical shutter as it offers the results of 12f/s in the single mode and 9f/s in the continuous shooting mode. It is also worth mentioning that the buffer can store more than 60 RAW photographs and more 600 JPEG photographs. The camera will also not disappoint the film-makers. We can record in 4K, with the speed of 60f/s at a bit rate of 150Mb/s, with 8-bit sampling 4:2:0 (4:2:2 through HDMI, but only for 4K 30f/s), and in Full HD with the speed of 180f/s. Apart from that, the camera offers many functions based on the movie mode, such as 6K Photo (long series with the speed of 30f/s, resolution – 16MP) or Post Focus (adjusting focus after taking a photograph). The camera is also equipped with the high resolution mode based on the sensor stabilization system. The camera will compose RAW files, with the dimensions of up to 10368 × 7776 pixels, from 8 frames created with the use of the sensor shift. Of course, in order to use this function we need a tripod and a static photographed object. The stabilization alone, with the support of the lens stabilization, is supposed to offer the efficiency of 6.5EV. For the first time in the Micro Four Thirds system, we get an exceptionally big, 3.68MP OLED viewfinder with the zoom of 0.83× (equivalent for full frame), the contrast of 10000:1 and the 21 mm eyepoint. The camera has two SD card slots (UHS-II standard) as well as microphone and headphone inputs, USB 3.0 and miniHDMI connectors. The applied DMW-BLF19 rechargeable battery is known from the GH4 and GH5 models. It will make it possible to take 920 photographs, under the condition that we use a viewfinder in the energy-saving mode. The camera, as could be expected from such a professional construction, is fully made of magnesium and fully sealed. It has a big grip, 3 function knobs, a joystick for changing AF points and many other function buttons. For sure a great novelty is an upper supporting LCD screen, with the most important information about the settings. Thanks to it, the camera is not so different from the professional cameras of other producers. PHOTOS OF THE PANASONIC LUMIX G9
